Introduction
In a time when sustainability is no longer just a choice but a necessity, we are called to rethink how we feed ourselves and the world around us. The traditional models of agriculture are facing limits, but nature has always provided us with untapped solutions. One of these is as ancient as it is overlooked—the humble grasshopper. For centuries, grasshoppers have been a natural part of ecosystems and diets in many cultures, offering a highly nutritious, sustainable source of protein.
Our company, established in Yorkshire, has since connected with farmers and researchers around the world, building a global network of knowledge. This book is the culmination of that shared expertise, featuring contributions from farmers across different continents who each bring unique insights into their methods of farming grasshoppers. From small rural operations to more structured urban setups, these farmers demonstrate the versatility of grasshopper farming. However, as with any venture in agriculture, standards must be observed to protect the integrity of food chains, ensure high nutritional value, study insect behavior, and prevent the spread of disease.
Grasshoppers are an excellent source of protein, boasting more than twice the amount found in chicken or beef, with a far smaller ecological footprint. Yet despite their benefits, the practice of entomophagy—eating insects—faces cultural resistance in certain parts of the world, particularly in Europe. Attitudes are gradually changing, but more research is needed into insect farming, not just for consumption but for its role in broader food systems and sustainability.
It’s important to note that while I have drawn from a wide range of scientific sources throughout this book, farming techniques should be adapted to your own environment and practiced responsibly. Practical experimentation and harvesting methods are best approached with care and at your own risk, as the field is still evolving and not universally regulated.
This book will be printed in multiple languages, enabling farmers and enthusiasts from all walks of life to explore and adopt grasshopper farming. Whether you are looking to start a small, sustainable farm or simply want to better understand how insects can fit into our future food systems, this book provides a foundational understanding and encourages you to innovate and share your journey.
The Story
Murzo began as a vision in the fields of Yorkshire, England, driven by a passion for product design and a commitment to sustainable farming. What started as an exploration into alternative food sources has grown into something far greater—a pioneering force in acridology and grasshopper farming, now with a presence on every continent. Our mission has evolved over time, but at its core, one thing has remained constant: the belief that grasshoppers, one of nature’s most efficient and nutritious insects, are the future of sustainable food production.
As a product designer, I’ve always been drawn to solving problems with innovative, practical solutions. The question of how to feed a growing global population, while preserving our planet’s resources, became increasingly pressing. With a world population that will surpass 9 billion by 2050, traditional food sources are no longer sufficient to meet demand. Grasshoppers, with their rich nutritional profile and low environmental impact, offer a solution. In fact, grasshoppers contain more than twice the protein of beef per gram, while using a fraction of the land, water, and feed required for conventional livestock.
Our company spent over a decade researching, experimenting, and developing farming systems that could produce grasshoppers not only as a food source for humans but also for the broader food chain. Through this journey, we have built an open-source model that encourages others to follow in our footsteps, sharing our knowledge freely as a way to push the industry forward. This commitment to transparency and innovation has been key to our growth. Today, Murzo is the leading producer of grasshoppers in the UK and is on a path toward global dominance in the industry.
But we didn’t stop at farming. Over the years, Murzo has expanded from a farming enterprise into a fully integrated biotech company, focused on perfecting the breeding, farming, and processing of grasshoppers for large-scale human consumption. We have invested heavily in research and development, working tirelessly to create highly nutritious lines of grasshopper species, harvested to meet the highest standards of quality and safety.
We are deeply passionate about acridology—the study of grasshoppers—and its role in the future of food. We believe in the power of Entomophagy, the practice of eating insects, not just as an alternative but as a necessary step toward sustainability. The world is slowly waking up to the possibilities that insect farming offers, and Murzo is at the forefront of this movement, leading with innovation and a dedication to making nutritious, sustainable food available to all.
Our story is still in progress. From those early days in Yorkshire, we’ve grown into a global leader in grasshopper farming and production. But the work doesn’t stop here. We remain driven by the desire to push the boundaries of what’s possible, to develop new technologies, and to continue sharing our knowledge with others. Grasshopper farming is not just our business—it’s our passion, and it’s a solution for the future.
